Philharmonic Musicians Make Beautiful Music with Shanghai Orchestra Academy Students in Teaching Visit

Posted December 19, 2018

Four Philharmonic musicians — Principal Bass Tim Cobb, violist Vivek Kamath, Associate Principal Bassoon Kim Laskowski, and Associate Principal Trombone Colin Williams — just got back from Shanghai, where they gave master classes, taught lessons, and provided chamber music coaching to students at Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA). They also performed with SOA students at two chamber concerts.

It’s all part of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership, established in 2014 by the New York Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and recently extended through the summer of 2022. Going forward, the Philharmonic will perform an annual China tour, and Philharmonic musicians will teach at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) four times each season.

Here are some photographs of the December 16 chamber concert, starting with a string quartet comprising three SOA students and Philharmonic violist Vivek Kamath:

And Laskowski came to the rescue, as SOA’s Facebook page reported:

See you in May for the next teaching visit!
