The New York Philharmonic recently hosted the first group of Zarin Mehta Fellows from our newest Global Academy partner, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
From May 22 to May 29 five fellows, selected by audition, worked closely with Orchestra musicians in one-on-one lessons, mock auditions, and chamber music coaching to delve into the working life of an orchestral musician. They even joined the Orchestra in the program conducted by David Robertson, May 26–28!
The Shepherd School is the third partner in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy, which is connecting with institutions worldwide to train pre-professional orchestra musicians of the future by harnessing the Philharmonic’s deep resources for national and international collaborations. From June 11 to 17 students from the Shanghai Orchestra Academy, a Global Academy creation, travel to NYC as the first international Zarin Mehta Fellows, and in July the Philharmonic visits Shanghai for a performance residency and education activities with the Shanghai Orchestra Academy.
