Philharmonic Schools

Philharmonic Schools offers schools the unique opportunity to integrate the Orchestra into the life of the school. Philharmonic Teaching Artists use major orchestral repertoire to teach students, teachers, and parents how to perceive, perform, and create music via year-long residencies. They prepare students in grades 3–5 to hear concerts in the school and at the Philharmonic and establish music as an essential element of the classroom and school community. Philharmonic Teaching Artist work has a strong curricular basis embodied in Pathways to the Orchestra, and the faculty is supported by extensive professional development throughout the season.

Teaching Artist Apprentices

TA Apprentices have the opportunity to learn and develop their teaching artist skills via classroom observations, demonstration lessons, short-term teaching residencies and professional development. Apprentices may be asked to perform In-School Concerts, Instrument Demos, and other important educational services at partner schools alongside current teaching artist faculty. TA Apprentices receive an annual stipend in addition to per service compensation for specified work. TA Apprentices are evaluated throughout the year and may be asked to join the Teaching Artist faculty the following year as openings arise.

We are looking for professional freelance players with classroom experience whose chamber and solo performance is at a high level and will represent the New York Philharmonic in a positive way, whether performing in a classroom, community setting, or a concert hall. Our faculty aims to represent the diversity of students and families in New York City, and we welcome any candidate who brings unique qualities to the Teaching Artist faculty, including those from groups who are underrepresented in American orchestras. Most importantly, candidates should be dedicated to arts education and have a desire to learn and grow in the field.
