Event Info

Mahler’s Sixth — a heart-stopping tour de force for virtuoso orchestra — discloses its tragedy slowly and dramatically: passages of great beauty and calm; violins soaring in the “Alma theme” (a portrait of the composer’s wife); and the sound of distant cowbells as if from alpine pastures. But in the end, Mahler revealed, prophetic hammer-blows of fate “fell [the hero] like the stroke of an axe.”

Conductor

Simone Young completed her musical studies in her native Sydney, and then began her career on the podium in Germany. This launched her international career, which has taken her to the most important opera houses and symphony orchestras around the world.

Ms. Young is currently principal guest conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and maintains a busy conducting schedule in the 2018–19 season, which sees her return once again to Berlin Staatsoper to conduct Richard Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten, Vienna Staatsoper with Wagner’s Lohengrin, Bavarian Staatsoper with Janáček’s From the House of the Dead and Jenůfa and Wagner’s Tannhäuser, and Oper Zürich with Richard Strauss’s Elektra. Equally in demand on the concert podium, the 2018–19 season brings Ms. Young to orchestras in Stockholm, Lausanne, Berlin, Leipzig, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, and Australia.

Her previous posts have included principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic (1998–2002), artistic director of Opera Australia (2001–03), principal guest conductor of Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Orchestra, artistic director of Hamburg Staatsoper, and chief music director of the Hamburg Philharmonic (2005–15).

Simone Young is known as a Wagner and Strauss specialist, a reputation she developed early in her career when she conducted multiple complete cycles of Wagner’s Ring at the Vienna Staatsoper and Berlin Staatsoper, as well as his Die Walküre and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg along with Strauss’s Elektra, Salome, Die Frau Ohne Schatten, and Ariadne auf Naxos, and a new production of Pfitzner’s Palestrina at Bavarian Staatsoper. Her long relationship with the Vienna Staatsoper began with her debut in 1993 and lasts until today. Outside of Vienna, Ms. Young has appeared as a guest conductor at such world-class opera houses as Opéra national de Paris; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and The Metropolitan Opera. She is a regular guest at the major opera houses in Munich, Berlin, Dresden, and Zurich.

Alongside her extensive operatic performances, Ms. Young has also made a name for herself as a symphonic conductor and has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York, Berlin, London, Munich, and Vienna philharmonic orchestras.
