Born in Chambéry in 1976, French violinist Renaud Capuçon began his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris at age 14, winning numerous awards during his five years there. He moved to Berlin to study with Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern, and was awarded the Prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1997 Claudio Abbado invited him to become concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, which he led for three summers, working with conductors including Abbado, Boulez, Seiji Ozawa, and Franz Welser-Möst.

Mr. Capuçon performs with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Orchestre national de France, Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, Filarmonica della Scala, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic. Highlights of his 2018–19 season include appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Camerata Salzburg, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, National Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, and a tour of Europe with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

He has built an extensive discography and records exclusively with Erato / Warner Classics. Recent releases include Bartók’s Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra and François-Xavier Roth, works by Brahms and Berg with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Daniel Harding, and chamber music by Debussy. His latest recording, Au Cinema, was released in October 2018.

In addition to numerous chamber music collaborations, Mr. Capuçon is artistic director of the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad and the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence, which he founded in 2013. In 2017 he founded the Lausanne Soloists, comprising current and former students of the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, where he has held a professorship since 2014. He plays the Guarneri del Gesù “Panette” (1737), which belonged to Isaac Stern.
