Biography
Hattie Bestul

Clarinetist Hattie Bestul believes music should be accessible to all people and strives to inspire others through innovative performance and educational opportunities. This focus propelled her study of methods of teaching and learning music, and the philosophy of teaching artistry. As a performer and teacher, Hattie designs interactive presentations and creates projects, such as her exploratory music course Beyond the Notes for the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s College for Kids program. An advocate of using music for good, Hattie has commissioned new works for social impact, including Kelley Sheehan’s two letters for two clarinets, which Hattie premiered alongside her Duo-E co-founder and which aims to celebrate and elevate women’s art, inspired by feminist poet Rupi Kaur.

Originally from Colorado, Hattie grew up primarily in Wisconsin, where her time with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra led her to pursue musical studies. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, she earned a Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program Certificate alongside her master of music degree. Hattie is committed to supporting programs that provide high-quality musical experiences and stir passion and dedication in students. Most recently she served as program manager for the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Brunswick, Maine.
